LYDON PEACOCK
Lydon is not only a founding member and voice of Splitting Edges, but also our lead guitarist. He gives the band more of a distinctive sound, through his unmatched ability to create addictive guitar riffs which complement his euphonious voice.
I started off writing music around the age of twelve, but it would be a lie to say I wasn’t surrounded by it as a child, with artists such as The Sex Pistols, the Clash, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and many more constantly being played around me in my youth. When I was twelve, my family and I went to Nashville on a holiday, and by the time I had come back to London I had started writing my own music.
Myself and Brad had been though a few bands in our teens, spending a lot of these years playing open mic after open mic, as well as our fair share of shit gigs. As a joke, many venues used to call us the boys with no name before we came on to play - so we eventually came up with the name Splitting Edges.
We’d been playing for so long together that around 2 months after we came up with our name, we had put together and released an EP. We hadn’t even played two of the songs on the EP together before we met in Perry Vale Studios during the pandemic. Nonetheless, we made a great EP called Sympathy Smoke which performed really well for a first release, with each track hitting around 4,000 streams with no paid promotion or marketing - we just relied on the good old power of sharing.
Growing up in London its always easy to have stuff to write about, theres always things happening or interesting people you encounter daily. The last three years for Brad and I have been such a journey, and we have found ourselves in some of the craziest situations and places. From these experiences, I have an arsenal of details and stories to talk about in my music. For me, it’s almost like the songs are all pieces of a bigger picture and story…
Writing has always been one of my favourite things about making music, and I feel that Jamie T, Alex Turner and King Krule inspired a lot of my lyrical approach. Seeing his style of music, a mix of melodically rapping ballads and singing opened a completely new door to me. I am always listening out for anything that sounds in any way poetic or phrases where words have real weight - and whenever I hear anything to this measure I will always have my notes on my phone up and will take note of it. Through this I can figure out ways to say the same thing in a way that suits the song I am writing. In terms of guitar influences, the previous three mentioned are also massive inspirations as well as the Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Catfish and the Bottlemen among many others.
The music I write is all about growing up in London or city life in general. Stories and tales of friends, foes, lovers, betrayal and revelry. Exploring themes of love, lust, luck, drugs, pubs, anger and grief! These topics are also great ways to connect with listeners as I’m sure they can relate to many of the stories.
Splitting Edges is eager to bring back soul, edge, and grit to modern music through our sound. With real, raw, emotional music, we are in the process of bringing back rock and roll to its former glory.
